The BESAL was envisaged as a cheap and simple light machine gun which could be quickly made in garages and small factories in the event Britain was invaded in 1940. Instead, the BESAL evolved into a possible substitute standard for the Bren. We take a look at the design and history of this very interesting and little known weapon.
